Still Moving Forward

I bet y'all thought this project went the way of the do-do, huh?  Welp, not exactly!  I'm still working through this thing.  Trying to figure out a few processes and talking to other people to get their skills involved!

I've been busy with other personal matters lately, but have been working on this on the side as I get time.

One of the major slow downs has been trying to locate sheet metal for this car.  As mentioned in another post, the quarter panels ended up way worse than I originally anticipated.  This kinda put a kink in the overall project and slowed me down a bit.

I've put adds in Craigslist and other sites looking for sheet metal for this thing, but have yet to find anything substantial.  It may come down to just having a body person sort some of that out for me.

While I've been trying to figure that bit out, I've been trying to sort out the order of operations on this whole next bit of the project.  I didn't want to end up getting the car back from body and paint to then drill holes in it for various items (wiring, HVAC, suspension, etc.).

So I decided I was going to start doing a rough mock-up of the car with parts that I'm thinking will require modification of the vehicle.  That way any holes I need to drill or brackets that need to be welded in can be done prior to paint.

It also gives me an excuse to order some new stuff so I feel like this thing is moving forward.

I ordered a 17 circuit wiring harness to replace the aged wiring in the car.  Part of the overall project will be hiding the wiring as much as possible.  To that end, I'm going to be mounting the fuse block in the trunk and running all of the wiring up the C-pillar over the roof and down the A-pillar to get to the front of the car.  This new harness has black wiring with colored stripes for each circuit.  It aslo uses newer blade type fuses instead of the original glass tube types.
This sure looks like fun!

I'm also working on a Visio diagram of the overall wiring that will be in the car.  I have an original schematic as well as the one provided with the new harness and I'll be combining the two so I can come up with a custom one for the car.

I'm also working on trying to find a new HVAC system for the car.  I reached out to a manufacturer of custom ones, but they were less than helpful.  I'm now looking to a couple installers for more help.  I'm hoping I can get a couple empty units so I can mock them up inside the car and figure out what fits best.  Idea being to get the smallest unit possible so I can hide it under the dash.

Next up, I was recommended to a company that restores fuel tanks.  Turns out that company is also a radiator repair shop!  I dropped off my gas tank and radiator with them.  I was hoping they could build me a custom aluminium radiator, but unfortunately they couldn't locate a core that would work with the size/space I have to work with.  Instead, they are going replace the core of the original one I gave them and make it more efficient.

Beyond that, I've been cleaning out the sand from the car and blasting a lot of the smaller components in my counter top cabinet.

so... much.... sand!

  1. Hi there, I, too, own a 73 st model that I eventually will be rebuilding. This will be my very first auto rebuild and I expect a lot of shortfalls along the way. May I tap off your knowledge to, hopefully, lessen the demise of this car?
