The Plan

There are several things that I want to see when this project is completed.  This page will break them down by section.  More items/detail will be added as they are discovered.  I'll also cross out stuff as I get it completed.

Overall
Generally rebuild, re-grease, and repaint just pretty much everything on this car.  Not looking to make it a trailer queen or drag car.  I want to update some of it with some modern features like Air Conditioning and all wheel disc brakes. From there the goal is to take it on road trips to car shows and other parts of the country.

Exterior
  • Replace any rusted or busted body panels
  • Fill door mirror and antenna holes
  • Obtain/install Japanese style fender mirrors
  • Repaint to Lexus Graphite Gray Pearl paint
  • Refurbish rear window louvers (nifty and never seen them other than this car)
  • Replace all weatherstripping
  • Replace any cracked plastic lenses with new
  • Replace front windshield
  • Tint door, quarter, and rear windows

Interior
  • Replace floors
  • Fully replace all electrical wiring
  • Have dashpad replaced, recovered, or rebuilt
  • Insulate interior
  • Have door panels rebuilt
  • Have seats replaced or rebuilt
  • Rebuild steering column
  • Replace gauges
  • Replace carpet
  • Replace headliner
  • Fix rear defrost
  • Replace heater with new HVAC system
  • Replace seatbelts
  • Install new stereo
  • Rebuild window regulators (remove slop)

Engine
Initial plan is to combine the original 18R-C and 18R-GR.  The 18R-C is good, but the block on the 18R-GR is cracked.  Since the R-C blocks are nearly identical (though the dipstick is on the opposite side), I should be able to combine the two, add some additional parts and have a more 'exotic' engine that is still carbureted  and correct for the vehicle.  I'm not ready yet to go fuel injection.

Future plan will be to look at making a 3SGT-E rear wheel drive.  This isn't impossible, but would require a lot more ingenuity than I'm initially looking for.  That and I'd rather have an earlier engine initially to enjoy more.

18R-GR option:
  • Have head rebuilt
  • Get new cams
  • Have block tanked
  • Source lightweight connecting rods
  • Source high compression pistons
  • Source timing chain rebuild kit
  • Have rotating assembly balanced and lightened
  • Source electronic ignition system (no points)
  • Source dual side draft carburetion system
  • Source 18R-GR header

Drivetrain
  • Obtain lightweight flywheel
  • Install heavy duty clutch
  • Replace throw out and pilot bearings
  • Install new slave and master cylinder
  • Go through W50 5-speed and replace bearings
  • Install short shifter for transmission
  • Rebuild driveline
  • Replace driveline carrier bearing
  • Replace third member with Zenki Corolla third member
  • Have Zenki rebuilt with new bearings
  • Upgrade limited slip in Zenki third member
  • Have axles shortened to fit third member
  • Replace axle bearings

Suspension
  • Replace all suspension with fully adjustable suspension
  • Convert front hubs to AE86 style
  • Determine spring rates needed for new suspension
  • Upgrade front disc brakes
  • Upgrade rear axles to disc brakes
  • Install Rota Grid Classic bronze wheels
  • Determine size and tire to use
